Gestational Carrier Evaluation

We believe a psychological evaluation should do more than determine suitability. It should help you feel informed, supported, and prepared for the journey ahead.

Your evaluation includes:

  • A comprehensive biopsychosocial interview
  • A joint conversation with your primary support person
  • Standardized psychological assessments completed during your session

Throughout the evaluation, you’ll also receive psychoeducation designed to help you better understand the emotional, relational, and practical realities of becoming a gestational carrier.

What you need to know

Biopsychosocial Interview

Your evaluation begins with a one-on-one conversation with your clinician. Together, we'll explore your personal history, your interest in becoming a gestational carrier, your support system, and whether this journey is a healthy fit for you and your family at this stage of life.

Joint Interview with Support Person

Every Embra evaluation includes a conversation with your primary support person, creating space to ensure you have meaningful support while also helping your loved one understand the journey and how to best support you along the way.

Psychological Assessment

Your evaluation includes standardized psychological assessments completed live with your clinician. We remain with you throughout the process, answering questions and reviewing your results together to ensure the most accurate interpretation.

Questions you might have in mind

Most Gestational Carrier Evaluations are completed within a single 2-hour appointment block and include a clinical interview, a brief conversation with your identified support person, and psychological testing. Intake paperwork and consent forms are completed beforehand.

The evaluation explores a variety of factors, including emotional wellbeing, support systems, understanding of the surrogacy process, motivations for becoming a carrier, communication skills, coping strategies, and readiness for the unique experiences that may arise throughout the journey, all based guidelines provided by the American Society of Reproductive Medicine.

A support person is someone who knows you well and is familiar with your decision to become a gestational carrier. For married/partnered carriers, your partner must attend as your support person. For unmarried carriers, it may be a partner, family member, or trusted individual (over the age of 18) who will play an active role in supporting you throughout the journey.

Once all components of the evaluation are complete, your clinician conducts a comprehensive review of the information gathered throughout the process. Using clinical judgment and ASRM Guidelines, the clinician develops recommendations regarding readiness and suitability for the gestational carrier journey and prepares a report for the referring agency or clinic.

The standard fee for a Gestational Carrier Evaluation is $690.

Most Gestational Carrier Evaluations are arranged through a referring agency or clinic. If you’ve been referred by one of Embra’s partners, your evaluation fee may be covered or billed directly through your program, and our team will contact you to coordinate scheduling. There is no need to book your appointment independently unless instructed to do so.

If you are arranging your evaluation independently, this service is offered as a self-pay psychological screening and is not billable to insurance.

Journey Check-In

Whether you’re preparing for a match, navigating a difficult transfer or pregnancy, adjusting to a change in plans, preparing for delivery, or reflecting after birth, Journey Check-Ins provide a dedicated space for guidance whenever you need it most.

A dedicated space to pause, reflect, and navigate whatever your family-building journey brings, at any time.

Matching is one of the most important decisions in the family-building process. This structured check-in provides space to explore priorities, expectations, questions, and concerns before moving forward with a gestational carrier or donor match.

The weeks leading up to delivery often bring new questions, emotions, and decisions. This check-in helps intended parents and carriers emotionally prepare for communication, expectations, boundaries, and the transition surrounding birth and the postpartum period.

The end of a journey often marks the beginning of a new chapter. This check-in provides an opportunity to reflect on the experience, process the transition, explore evolving relationships, and consider what comes next for you and your family.

How Much Worry Is Too Much Worry?

Family building comes with uncertainty, and uncertainty naturally creates worry. The goal isn't to eliminate anxiety. It's knowing when anxiety has started taking up more space than it needs to.
